Studying Diseases Statistically
The map below shows where deaths from emphysema & bronchitis are highest; these areas are dark purple. These diseases are usually caused by cigarette smoking.

Clearly there are at least three regions in the United States where deaths are higher than average:
  • Area 1: Mountainous or high altitude regions of the West
  • Area 2: Southeast U.S. (and north of that, Kentucky)
  • Area 3: Northeast U.S. (states bordering St. Lawrence River)
Can you think of a reason why each of these regions might show higher death rates from cigarette smoking?
      ...Do more people smoke there? Why??
      ...Is smoking more dangerous for you there? Why??

When you think you know the answer, go back to the map and click on each of the areas, one by one, to see the explanations!

Did you spot the other high-death-rate region?
It's the Midwest... a traditional farming area. Any explanation?
